Communication is hard, especially in a fast-paced world. My little U11/12 soccer team learned how to communicate with each other. They all had different jobs on the field, but they all had one common goal. If a bunch of kids can find their role and work together, surely we can?
Society doesn’t make sense anymore. OK, that’s not exactly a revelation I suppose, but when we try to eradicate core processes in our operating system you know we are moving in a wrong direction. Stop trying to pretend labels don’t matter and we shouldn’t use them, they are essential in our development and social identity.
We feel safe when we find a group we identify with. It is insecurity that leads us to become extreme in our positions, and the more insecure we are, the more extreme our behaviours. The more we question, learn, grow, and understand, the more secure we become. You can fake-news-proof yourself by simply questioning.
We are living in a world where people believe what they see on the surface. If someone with a high-profile seems to be taking a risk for a cause, they will be heroes. It doesn’t even matter if the risk is real anymore, supporters will believe it. Seek to uncover something new today and ask the question “Why?”
In a world where people are increasingly more resistant to the idea that someone can disagree without being the enemy it isn’t an easy concept to take in, but we can actually do this if we want to. We can change the world, one person at a time simply by listening, allowing a voice, and growing. Try it, I guarantee your stress will decrease.
It’s not easy to admit we are wrong. It sucks. But that’s OK. Any time we have to change our position, learn new ideas, or admit we may have flaws in our worldview it is difficult, but that doesn’t mean we should simply double down. Learn, grow, and allow yourself to be challenged, it’s a lot less stressful to be open to a challenge and learn than it is to perform the mental gymnastics of defending an indefensible position.
